Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was in town Thursday to announce state efforts to help a local business create at least 72 jobs over the next three years.

Shenandoah Sustainable Technologies LLC expects to create the jobs as it makes a minimum $600,000 capital investment during that period. SST, which currently employs fewer than 30 people, helps build and retrofit residential and commercial structures using environmentally friendly and cost-efficient technology.

SST President and Director Zach Fettig, 25, of Middleburg, said the number of jobs and capital investment are probably conservative estimates.Read Full Article

It’s the business

Thursday’s debate between House District 25 incumbent Steve Landes and Democratic challenger Greg Marrow produced fireworks when Marrow twice questioned Landes’ effectiveness in producing jobs for the Shenandoah Valley.

Thursday’s debate between House District 25 incumbent Steve Landes and Democratic challenger Greg Marrow produced fireworks when Marrow twice questioned Landes’ effectiveness in producing jobs for the Shenandoah Valley.

Marrow, a Harrisonburg optometrist, said his examination of five years of Landes’ legislative record showed numerous bills to change Virginia codes but “none of them about increasing the quality of life in the Shenandoah Valley.”

The usually stoic Landes responded strongly, and at one point handed Marrow a folder full of papers detailing his legislative record.Read Full Article

These ‘green jobs’ are heading to China

Next time you hear politicians promising the restrictive environmental laws they’re passing will put Americans back to work in green jobs, ask the workers who make light bulbs how it’s working out for them.

Next time you hear politicians promising the restrictive environmental laws they’re passing will put Americans back to work in green jobs, ask the workers who make light bulbs how it’s working out for them.

General Electric is shuttering light bulb factories in Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, putting 400 workers off the job. Why? Because the factories make the old-style incandescent bulbs, which are being outlawed by congressional decree.

The old bulbs will be replaced by the environmentally correct compact fluorescents bulbs. But they won’t be made in GE’s American factories.Read Full Article

Virginia’s Bob McDonnell – the “Jobs Governor”?

Republican Bob McDonnell appears to be dancing to a new jingle: his own promise to be a “jobs governor – bringing new energy resources and jobs to Virginians.” The promise, made public in a recent TV advert, could mean a lot for Virginia’s economy and for the nation’s sustainability scene. But are McDonnell’s claims substantial enough to take to the bank?

Republican Bob McDonnell appears to be dancing to a new jingle: his own promise to be a “jobs governor – bringing new energy resources and jobs to Virginians.” The promise, made public in a recent TV advert, could mean a lot for Virginia’s economy and for the nation’s sustainability scene. But are McDonnell’s claims substantial enough to take to the bank?

The ad follows the premise that “new energy means new jobs.” “We need it all – wind, oil, natural gas, clean coal, nuclear,” the ad says. McDonnell’s promises are clear: he’ll “lead a bipartisan effort to make VA the energy capital of the East Coast,” create “new green jobs zones to help innovators create renewable energy,” promote “safe offshore drilling for natural gas,” and “create new energy and jobs now.” Yet I wonder: where is McDonnell coming from in making these claims, can (or will) he make good on them, and what effect would his plans really have?Read Full Article

Green ideas gain traction

Could local governments like the City of Rockingham one day move away from using vehicles that run on gasoline and other fossil fuels?

Could local governments like the City of Rockingham one day move away from using vehicles that run on gasoline and other fossil fuels?

It may not happen tomorrow, but that’s the goal of a program being instituted across the state.

The Triangle J Council of Governments, which is made up of seven counties including Moore and Lee, was the recipient of a grant last week to reinforce efforts to introduce electric and biofuel vehicles into North Carolina’s public and private sectors.Read Full Article
