Mayor Cory A. Booker, Newark Municipal Council Members, EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck, Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor, Sustainability Officer Chelsea Albucher and other dignitaries marked the one-year anniversary of President Obama’s signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and highlighted the use of federal stimulus funds to remediate three brownfield sites, during a press conference in the City Hall Rotunda, today.

EPA brownfields grants address properties at which expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2009, Newark received $600,000 in ARRA funds to conduct cleanups at three sites: a former gas station on Bergen Street in the South Ward; the NSC Plating and Polishing Company on South 12th Street in the West Ward; and the International Metallurgical Services site on Blanchard Street in the East Ward. The stimulus-funded cleanup activities will help reclaim these three sites for productive uses. The South Ward site is slated for retail use, the West Ward site for housing, and the East Ward site for light industrial purposes. Each development is part of a broader neighborhood development strategy that benefits the City and its residents at large.Read Full Article

N.J. Harvests Sun but Finds Green Jobs Elusive

New Jersey celebrated a milestone last week as it reached 100 megawatts of installed solar capacity, spurring official chest-thumping.

Gov. Jon Corzine (D) called the state’s 100 MW mark a “monumental achievement [that] only serves to further strengthen New Jersey’s position as one of the fastest-growing solar energy markets in the United States.” And other officials crowed that the Garden State has more solar power per capita and per square mile than the overall U.S. leader, California.

Research by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council shows New Jersey with more solar power than Florida, Texas, Arizona and Nevada combined. New Jersey just edges out Colorado for grid-connected solar, but it has roughly double the cumulative capacity.Read Full Article

‘Green jobs’

The state Senate last week passed a bill that would create a revolving loan program to allow homeowners to weatherize their homes.

The state Senate last week passed a bill that would create a revolving loan program to allow homeowners to weatherize their homes.

“Riverdale is the kind of area where it could easily benefit,” said state Sen. Eric Schneiderman, who has part of the neighborhood in his district.

If Gov. David Paterson signs the bill, the state would start by raising $112 million from the auction of rights to release greenhouse gases. Then, New York will set up programs to loan up to $13,000 to qualified homeowners, with higher rates for commercial buildings and multi-family buildings.Read Full Article

However, both of these industries are part of the green jobs revolution in New Jersey. New Jersey Governor Corzine is including green jobs as part of his state’s economic recovery plans.
Approximately 13,000 private sector jobs were created in the state in July. Although all of these jobs weren’t in green industries, clean energy job growth in the state is continuing to rise. When Ronald Tucker, a sheet-metal worker who had bounced among at least five New Jersey companies over 20 years, was laid off again in March, he decided it was time to trade a job surrounded by silver for one based on green.

Instead of looking for jobs making animal cages or ticket dispensers for Skee-Ball machines, the 41-year-old Tucker enrolled in the first class of green-jobs training at the Hispanic Family Center in Camden. The father of one learned how to test home insulation.

After graduating July 1, he landed a job with New Jersey utility giant Public Service Electric & Gas Co. He starts in September.Read Full Article
