This December, Denver based Veterans Green Jobs will be among a group of American veterans representing the United States at the Climate Summit in Copenhagen.
Meanwhile, here at home, clean energy legislation is being debated in the Senate which will determine the future of a new sustainable economy and will ensure the U.S. makes strides toward energy independence. As military service veterans, we ask Sens. Bennet and Udall to take a stand on a vote that has great importance to our national security: a vote for clean energy.
America is far too reliant on the dirty, polluting fossil fuels of the past that subject our economy to major fluctuations in fuel prices and threaten our national security. Moving to energy that is clean, domestic, cheap, and safe will take some effort but the payoff will be enormous.Read Full Article

Colorado State University (CSU) and Veterans Green Jobs have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create the Veterans Green Jobs Education Initiative at the university.
The MOU establishes a formal relationship between CSU and Denver-based nonprofit Veterans Green Jobs for the purpose of enhancing opportunities for military veterans to attend the university, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The initiative promotes academic disciplines that provide post-educational career opportunities for veterans in the green jobs sector, both in Colorado and nationally.
“Veterans of our armed forces hold a special place in our campus community because of their willingness to serve our nation and the sacrifices they’ve made to fulfill their commitments,” says CSU President Tony Frank. “This MOU can help provide a veteran with a second career after their military service, as well as contribute to Colorado’s new energy economy.”Read Full Article

The sun had just crested the distant ridge of the Rocky Mountains, but already it was producing enough power for the electric meter on the side of the Smiley Building to spin backward.
For the Shaw brothers, who converted the downtown arts building and community center into a miniature solar power plant two years ago, each reverse rotation subtracts from their monthly electric bill. It also means the building at that moment is producing more electricity from the sun than it needs.
“Backward is good,” said John Shaw, who now runs Shaw Solar and Energy Conservation, a local solar installation company.Read Full Article

In his Sept. 19 column “Tricks and Treats,” Bob Greenlee referred to a PLAN-Boulder County question to City Council candidates as “the perfect chance to prattle on about the wonders of environmental purity and how profit-making goals can meld into fascist-oriented capitalism.”
For a community leader with “green” in his name, we would hope that Former Mayor Greenlee would understand two important objectives of PLAN-Boulder County: an unspoiled environment (the green of sustainability) and a strong economy (the green of money). PLAN-Boulder County knows that these two objectives are not mutually exclusive—in fact they are a foundation of today’s and tomorrow’s economy and the solid performance we have seen in our local economy during this steep recession.Read Full Article
